Selecting the Perfect Spiral Welded Tubing for Commercial Drainage

Proper drainage is essential in commercial and industrial environments. Therefore, you should review your current drainage structure and consider upgrades as required. One of the critical elements that you should think about replacing or updating in your operation space is the drainage tubing. The drainage tubing system includes rainwater downpipes, industrial waste disposal channels and culvert tubing. There are numerous types of replacement drainage products in the market to consider for your building. Spiral welded tubing is one of the most advantageous designs for efficient drainage. This design consists of rolled sheet metal with reinforced welded joints, so the tubing is strong and durable. Here are important considerations to help you select ideal spiral tubing for commercial drainage.

Fabrication Materials

When buying spiral welded tubing, you should inquire about the materials available from your supplier. Your selection will determine the durability and performance of your drainage channels after installation. Generally, spiral tubes are manufactured using steel because it provides prolonged service. The common steel materials for the tubing include carbon, mild and stainless steel. Carbon steel is the standard carbon and iron alloy, and it is favoured for its strength in general drainage applications. Mild steel is similar, but this has lower carbon content. This makes it cheaper to buy, though its strength will also be lower. Both of these materials are susceptible to rusting, so ensure that your tubes are galvanised. If you have good financial resources, consider using stainless steel since it is resistant to rusting.


Spiral welded tubes are fabricated using sheet metal of different thicknesses. This aspect is known as the gauge of the metal, and it is important in determining the resilience and structural stability of the drainage tubing. Therefore, you should ensure that the pipe has sufficient thickness for your usage. Basically, you will need tubing with thicker walls if you are draining heavy fluids as opposed to water. In addition, if there will be weight or pressure exerted on the piping after installation, ensure that the walls are strong enough to resist distortion. For example, tubes intended for culvert applications should not be damaged by the roadway above.

Application Rating

These are technical properties that dictate whether the tubing can be used for your drainage. Check the pressure rating and ensure that your commercial flow will not stress the structure. Additionally, consider the chemical resistance of the tubes if they are intended for draining industrial waste.
